CONFLICTING COURT JUDGEMENTS: THE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE NATION & PDP.

A symbol of Justice
More than anything else, lawyers are daggers drawn over the conflicting court pronouncements on the National Convention holding in Port Harcourt, Wednesday, August 17, 2016. If anything else the pronouncements portray a Judiciary in disarray. For one, Justice Okon Abang sitting at the Federal High Court in Abuja, early Monday morning ordered the stoppage of the convention apparently giving vent to the prayers brought before it by the embattled factional PDP Chairman, Alhaji  Modu Ali Sheriff.  Political watchers say that judgment was delivered without consideration for national interest or security of the nation. The judgment carried the impression that Justice Okon Abang    was merely being selfish. “He could have considered the outcome on national security and the safety of lives and property”, said Malam Isa Abu a staff of an Abuja based private company.
But from Port Harcourt came another judgment on the morning of Tuesday, August 16, by another Federal High Court granting approval for the PDP convention to continue. The suit was brought before the court by Senator Ben Obi, secretary of the PDP national planning committee. The court presided over by Justice Watila validated the holding of the convention by ordering INEC to ensure that it monitored the event in line with the law! Learned people here say, this judgment is timely and is superior because it is an “interlocutory injunction”, while the one delivered in Abuja was an “interim injunction”! But popular opinion on the streets says that Nigerians should just be saved these legal jargon's!
However, political observers are disappointed in the attitude of Federal Judges. “This is something they ought to sit down and discuss, what is good for the country, not what is better for an individual”, said Ismaila Ahmed, a political consultant. “They ought to know that the livelihood of thousands depend on this convention and therefore adopt a middle of the road approach, not outright dismissal “, he said further. Another interested observer, Emmanuel Elijah added: “what does Justice Abang stand to gain by pandering to the wishes of a sectional leader”? “Will he say he does not know that Sheriff is a spoil sport”, the man questioned.

The Expose News is worried that Federal Judges ought to draw a line between partisan politics and national interest, because no matter the amount of money that exchanged hands cannot be equated to the peace and security of the nation!
