Construction work in progress in an unnamed location |
The
local Secretary of Contractors Guild Association, Mallam Rilwanu Yakubu has
called on the Federal Government to scrap the payment of Non-refundable
deposits commonly charged by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). The call, according to the Secretary became
necessary because the scheme has outlived its usefulness. "It is now being used
as a weapon of exploitation”, Yakubu claimed. “It’s no
longer secret that those who pay non-refundable deposits ever hardly win jobs”,
Mallam Yakubu insisted. “The people who
charge these fees are the same people who “win” the jobs”, he disclosed. “Through this process, millions
are eventually raked into private pockets and thereby dashing the hopes of the
contractors”, he added.
In
reality, that scheme is old fashioned and should be phased out without further
delays.
