For the Judiciary, it may yet be “business as
usual”. Despite bundles of cases –
mostly on corruption – the nation is yet to witness any reasonable conviction;
thus, it is with sadness Nigerians watch as one high profile case after the
other gets stuck and thrown out. The
“suspects” themselves smile to courts knowing the ultimate fate that awaits
them.
They “know” that when a “Governor”, “Senator”
or “big wig” is arrested, charged to court, remanded in Kuje – usually for 3
days – the next step is freedom!
In other climes, Justice is dispensed with
dispatch. Recently, Indonesia put to
death some drug convicts. The terror
suspects who despoiled France and the United States were “caught” and
“arraigned” in court. Israel had one of
its soldiers convicted who took part in the murder of some Palestinian
youths. If Nigeria must move forward,
the Judiciary and the Police must be allowed to perform effectively. Another thing, it must be correctly spelt out
that no one is above the law! “This is
one area that Nigerians feel too big and proud for nothing”, said one Omo
Osagiede, a P.R Consultant in Abuja.
