Darkness looms as Huge Debts threatens GENCOS
Electricity Generating Companies in Nigeria
have raised alarm that their continued existence is being threatened by huge
unpaid debts by various Stakeholders and that they are currently running their
operations at a huge loss currently put at N242.7 billion. But the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading
Plc, NBET, weekend said it had paid N186.7 billion leaving a balance of N156
billion. But the GENCOS are now said to
have limited option: to either shut down operations proactively or be compelled
to do so by the current State of affairs in the power sector. At the moment only about 2,304 MW is being
generated out of about 7,856.52 MW available capacity in the country. So, what is our leaders doing?
