An
overwhelming majority of lagosians has condemned the move by the Lagos
State House of Assembly to probe the purchase of 820 buses by former Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode for public transportation, describing it as unnecessary and diversionary! The poll result exposed the move as a tactic designed to coarse
and intimidate political appointees to submission and subject them to perpetual
manipulation! They also faulted the subject of the probe insisting that the
buses are visible for all to see and already in operation! These are some of the startling revelations plucked out from the hastily conducted opinion poll to ascertain
the mood of Lagosians after the news broke out last tuesday whether
they are in support or not. A large majority views the attempt as no more than a
kangaroo attempt to nail the former governor at all cost. The poll carried out
in strategic districts around the Lagos metropolis showed a staggering 65% of
Lagosians are clearly not in support of the probe expressing surprise at the motive
coming so soon after the aborted attempt to impeach the former governor while in office including
the non-release of the 2019 appropriation bill, which rightly frustrated his last
days in office; and now the probe! This group of respondents rhetorically asked:
is this not a confirmation that the Lagos Assembly has become a mere “rubber stamp”? Respondents
in Surulere, Ikeja, Apapa, Orile, Ogba, Jibowu, Ojodu, Isheri areas all returned
the same negative verdict. Those sampled include men and women from the age bracket of
25-60. Their reasons were unanimous:
This is an ill-advised move and should be halted immediately. The poll result showed the outcome of the probe was already premeditated and headed in
one direction: to publicly ridicule an innocent man! 25% of
the respondents expressed disgust at the sad turn of events calling the damning
move a “witch-hunt”. They agreed that the House of Assembly being a cesspit of
corruption itself, ordinarily lacks the potential to push for Ambodes’ indictment
unless there was strong backing from “somewhere”; this group of people mostly
25-35 years bracket reminded Nigerians that the Assembly people are the same
set of people that wanted to “impeach” the former governor while in office for
no just cause! They also point to the manner he was frustrated at the party’s
primary when he was completely isolated. The same set of accusers and judges
are now set to fine tune their strategies to deliver the killer punch. Another
5% dismissed the probe as no more than a power play. They say Ambode’s refusal
to “bow” for the powers that be, cannot go unpunished, noting that this is reminiscent of Nigeria’s dirty style of politics. The
remaining 5% said they are worried because they are turning democracy upside down noting that this is not a case of PDP versus APC, but APC against APC! Above all, the poll results returned a verdict of poor cooperation amongst the Yorubas who are adept at washing their linen in public, while other tribes
are consolidating, regardless of the spate of kidnapping, marauding herdsmen, banditry and robbery enveloping the land concluding that the former governor is a Yoruba man like them and has
nothing to do with 2023 politics!
