Mum is
the word at the Lagos APC secretariat in Acme road, Ogba, Ikeja where our
reporters had gone to gauge the opinion of party members over the recent tango between
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the EFCC. Our reporter’s attempt to speak to the
party’s secretary proved abortive as he evaded all the questions put to him; but
one of the officials who preferred to remain anonymous gave an insight as to
what might have been the likely reason behind Ambode’s ordeal with the EFCC. ‘Look
our former Governor was a complete gentleman and a technocrat who knew his job; we are not happy at what is
happening to him”, he began. ‘We, here, in APC, are supposed to support him
because he is our own; but because the powers
that be fell out with him, it is like he must be crucified”, he told our
reporters. The official went on: “You remember that Ambode had begged the powers that be before the primaries;
also remember that he even enlisted bigwigs all over the country including Mr
President to beg them, all to no avail”. The official then wondered: “is it now
they want him to go and beg again and be humiliated further?” He continued: “ Yes,
they made him Governor, but Ambode was loyal and committed; don’t forget he served
for many years as Accountant General; so
you can see that he is a member of the Establishment who ought to have progressed
to be a minister like others before him,
what more do they want from him?, he queried. While he was yet speaking another
interested official who also preferred anonymity suggested that Ambode’s sins
may not be far from his refusal to play ball on some rumoured underground deals
hence he was described as “not a party man”, whatever that means. ‘Don’t forget
they even stopped him from implementing the State Budget until he left”. “They
prevented a serving Governor from implementing the State Budget, does that not
amount to an over kill? Our reporter’s gathered that the officials are angry
that “our leaders should be careful what they do with Ambode for his hands are
clean”.
Journalism has continued to evolve since the days of veterans like Professors Alfred Opubor, Onoura Nwuneli, Ralph Akinfeleye, Adidi Uyo, Idowu Sobowale, and other greats, not to mention the shining lights of flawless prose writing like Dan Agbese, Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed, Dele Gowa, and not least, Olatunji Dare. But the entrance of Sahara Reporters appears to deviate from those widely held pragmatic principles of decency. Stories by our reporters In those days, the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Lagos was very hot and remains so to date. Exciting lecturers in the mold of Dr Adidi Uyo, Ralph Akinfeleye, and Idowu Sobowale made teachings very robust and thirsty to listeners. Students learnt the trade and picked up fast. They taught the tenets of practical journalism exhaustively and left no stone unturned. They made journalism so sweet that students were always hungry to learn more; the thrills were such that even the 13 points cut-off mark for entry ...
