THE MEDIA IS ENCOURAGING NEPOTISM-GROUP

Making the media the conscience of our society – Today NewspaperA group known as the Vanguard for Promotion of Equality has blasted the Nigerian Press for always promoting strange vices such as nepotism and ethnic superiority. The group made this position known in a statement signed by its Secretary-General Malam Yakubu Rilwan. The statement wondered why so soon after the demise of the former Chief of Staff to Mr. President that a number of names being bandied are all of the same ethnic stock. " Is Nigeria the exclusive preserve of certain group of persons?" Malam Yakubu wondered why the press has abandoned their primary role as protectors of Nigeria's' hard earned democracy. "Look at the way CNN, Washington Post, New York Times operate; they see the country as their entire forte and speak the truth where possible", he said. "They carry out investigative journalism and get to the bottom of any fact", he added. Malam Yakubu stated that those names being bandied about as possible replacement for the departed COS are not the most qualified in Nigeria. "How do you even mention the name's of serving governors as possible replacement", he queried. "Nigeria is not suddenly short of manpower", he concludes. Aside from Babagana Kingibi, Nasir-El-rufai, and others mentioned, there are powerful individuals from the south like Malam Isa Inuwa, Senator Magnus Abe, Akinwunmi Ambode, Godwin Obaseki, Peter Obi, and even Babatunde Fashola. "These are eminently qualified candidates", the group reasoned. The group subsequently called on the press to always present balanced views and stop limiting policy makers. They also encourage the press to be bold and work for the unity of Nigeria -not to encourage ethnic superiority.

Sahara Reporters, Premium Times, The Cable and Modern Journalism

Journalism has continued to evolve since the days of veterans like Professors Alfred Opubor, Onoura Nwuneli, Ralph Akinfeleye, Adidi Uyo, Idowu Sobowale, and other greats, not to mention the shining lights of flawless prose writing like Dan Agbese, Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed, Dele Gowa, and not least, Olatunji Dare. But the entrance of Sahara Reporters appears to deviate from those widely held pragmatic principles of decency. Stories by our reporters In those days, the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Lagos was very hot and remains so to date. Exciting lecturers in the mold of Dr Adidi Uyo, Ralph Akinfeleye, and Idowu Sobowale made teachings very robust and thirsty to listeners. Students learnt the trade and picked up fast. They taught the tenets of practical journalism exhaustively and left no stone unturned. They made journalism so sweet that students were always hungry to learn more; the thrills were such that even the 13 points cut-off mark for entry ...
