The President, General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd, was
reportedly stunned Monday morning of sallah day when the EFCC presented lists
of corrupt forex dealers to him in his Aso Rock office: all of them were
members of his present government! And the President exclaimed: “what”? He called
the CBN governor asking and angrily asked him: “what’s all this nonsense”? By
then it was too late: illicit trade in Forex had gone too far! And as the Emir
of Kano had alleged, influential people in Buhari’s Government sit in their
gardens and rake in billions, just because they had access to the CBN!
But the CBN Governor was not alone; almost all
the APC top hierarchies in Government were involved; their hands had been soiled
by forex dealings and the President was not happy about it. When the Emir of
Kano sounded the alarm, it was first treated as a joke; but now as the
President discovered, a lot of water had crossed under the bridge!
This development is no surprise however to
political observers, because when you fail to punish those indicted in the
past, you are inviting more trouble: people become more emboldened to surpass
their previous heists. “You cannot turn Government into merchandise”, said Mr.
Ambrose Imode; “when you do, you get punished”, he told the Expose news.
As one observer puts it, “Buhari would not do
anything to these officials”; according to him, he may just be powerless.
