When next you see the acclaimed
national leader and his party’s chairman whispering in the dark, hold it; they
are not planning for your welfare but how to deny Obaseki the coveted APC guber
ticket. This is all evident in the “mock” primary recently conducted in Benin with
armed policemen and soldiers in the toe. For in that very action, it is clear
the forthcoming primary is going to be everything but credible. Not with this
kind of daring confrontation right there in the lairs nose. It is strange that
Benin sons and daughters have become lame ducks subjected to manipulations by
the unforgiving demagogue from Abuja who derides himself as the Almighty god of
Edo politics simply because of the lust for political power and wealth. The ominous silence from the seat of power is
another angle to this dangerous gambit. This is sheer insensitivity. This breach is coming at a time the world is
taking stringent measures to curtail the tide of a gruesome disease; this is
coming at a time when countries like United States and Britain combined, having
lost thousands already are sweating day and night with all technological
applications to save the situation; sadly, this has not registered in the minds
of these wicked people; they think they own life. The grim setting at the Edo
State capital shows their clear disregard and impunity for the laws of the land;
they act as though they are bigger than the law! And why not, when those who are
supposed to call them to order are keeping mute, what other license do you need
to unleash terror? But we will let them know that Edo State is not a conquered
territory. What happens if INEC suddenly
shift the primary date just in case the pandemic persists? Would the “specialist
in elections” apply jungle tactics or guerrilla warfare to achieve his aim?
For it is obvious that the matter, as it stands is no more an ordinary election
but open war! Let your mind flash back to the days of the battles to remove
senator Bukola Saraki from office. This same man with much vaunted pride had
decreed that he, Saraki “would either be removed by hook or crook or legal or any
other means available”. Yet this is a country that claims to practice
democracy. If this is allowed to continue, then the wrong message is being sent
to our children: use any means to get
what you want! They got away with this crime in the last 2019 Lagos State
APC primary where a highly successful and performing governor was unjustly
prevented from flying the party’s ticket, now they are more determined and ready
to repeat the same feat in Edo. Recall that in that Lagos primary, this same
national chairman was the arrowhead. But we have bad news or him: this time is
going to be different. Obaseki will prevail; but he-Obaseki-has to fight for
his fundamental human rights. He must know that in life, you only get what you
demand –not what you deserve. It is men that are going to fight this war-not
spirits. Therefore he mustn’t fret; we know he is not desperate. But the entire
poor, the grassroots now depend on him to make sure that Edo State does not relapse
back to the hands of thugs, exploiters, ten presenter’s; that would be
disastrous; Obaseki owes them a duty to defend the treasury with all his executive powers to crash this violent ambition of his opponents. Edo State
is not the exclusive preserve of one man; when you stand your grounds against
wrong, right will prevail. Immorality has never defeated morality. After all,
these same “spoilers” had said before that “no man is god”. Why then do they think the same God has
changed? God hates deceit; God abhors pretence. Mr Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s’
immediate past president had said “his ambition is not worth spilling the blood
of a single Nigerian”, and he kept to his word allowing due process to rule all.
Why then this proud APC national leader doesn’t want due process? Though he once
boasted that he has never lost any
election, an average student of history would tell him that Napoleon
Bonaparte the great Roman general himself lost battles. No man is infallible. If
there is any one time for Obaseki to defend himself, that time is now. He
should not be jittery in any form. If the national chairman of his party has
decided to apply brute force to uproot him, he too should get ready to apply
the same method to retain his seat. If democracy has now turned to my father’s private property, then the
people are no longer safe. It is unfortunate; only God can explain why Nigeria’s
men of power tend to use their massive influence the negative way; otherwise,
how come the law is silent on this dangerous breach? Obaseki must stand up as a man and not cave
him. If he doesn’t, the only way out is infamy. He might even be lucky not to
be prosecuted for trumped up charges. For example, one of Obaseki’s opponents
recently charged that they built a university under 8 months towards the
twilight of their tenure in office; but he did not remember to tell Nigerians
that they got a staggering loan of $75million--wait for it—and executed the
jobs themselves! Maybe they still think Nigerians are still living in the woods;
they are unaware of the tremendous impact the social media is making to expose
pretence. Edo State people are no longer under a spell; they can no longer be hypnotised.
They are all aware that we live in a wicked and extremely violent world. If not,
no sane party would allow a national chairman who is in open feud with his
State governor to supervise the same election; there is no better way to know
mischief. The correct thing to do is to engage a neutral referee if they are
confident of winning under any guise. If Adams Oshiomole cannot lose his State,
the same is normal for the governor! What is good for the goose is also good
for the gander. Under this covid-19 atmosphere it is out rightly insane to
allow Oshiomole continue the way he is doing. If he doesn’t know the difference
between justice and fairness he should be taught. The unholy alliance between
him and his Lagos masters lend credence to the fact that the All Progressive
Congress has been hijacked. If anything, this confirms the irrelevance of democratic
Institutions in the scheme of things. Nigeria
must move away from the Chris Uba-Ngige era when the latter was “kidnapped”
right in government house. Should we be going round and round under the so
called “home grown” democracy? How does baseki’s
refusal to surrender the state treasury amount to a crime? The APC government should be careful not to be
seen as agents of polarisation that abhors simple ethics and decency. There are better uses of power and influence
than this obvious conspiracy against our nascent democracy. Benin City has been without light for the last
decade; it is a sorry sight to visit Benin and be lucky to have light in 3
days1 they call it “rationing”-in the 21st century! This is what
should occupy the mind of Oshiomole and not this gerrymandering. Edo State
needs light, not war; Edo State needs honest men of integrity, not rebels or
High Priest who masquerade as messiahs. By ganging up against the incumbent
governor and flexing muscles with him the message is clear: the June 2 primary
is not going to be credible. It is not going to be about the rule of law,
performance, probity or accountability either; unfortunately, because they know
that nobody can stop them, they are out armed to the teeth! We live in a world
of danger if some people cannot be controlled by laws and regulations. And what
has happened to our constitution anyway? Thrown away? You bet. So, Obaseki must
brace up and defend his stance against the so called “stomach infrastructure”.
Luckily for the grassroots, Obaseki is not a coward. Away with pretence
gentlemen. All these tumultuous agitations are unnecessary. But that’s where we
have found ourselves with the brutish predators from Lagos and Abuja who see
the rest of us as preys. It is clear that these people are no longer listening
to God who in Hebrew 12 v. 14 tells us: “make every effort to live in peace
with one another”!
Appointed since 1 st April, 2015 till date, Prof. Adepoju Adeshola Olatunde, Director-General of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has left no room to chance. The Ph.D holder in Agricultural and Environmental Economics (2002) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State has taken extra-ordinary steps to see the Forestry Institute to the next level of existence.
